Beautifully written. There is a wonderful analysis of why Muslims in India are still per capita the poorest people in India. If you look at the reasons it boils down to education and discrimination. Indians, in large numbers, have voted for a man and a party that is blatantly and very obviously anti-Muslim.
Unfortunately, believing his mantra of 'development' and 'lowered inflation' – on which he has not delivered – even some Muslims have voted for him. He has run campaigns of hatred and won thrice now - we have no limit to the number of years a person can be the Prime Minister as long as his or her party supports them. To people who are marginally better educated, it's appalling, but there are millions of highly educated people (a Bachelor's degree at least) that support him blindly. Including US citizens, who send him dollars and flock to his rallies in the US. Doubtless, the same 'useful idiots' who have supported Donald Trump.
It's always the 'won't happen to me' mantra. People just don't remember what Martin Niemöller wrote:
First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out – because I was not a socialist.
Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out – because I was not a trade unionist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out –because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me – and there was no one left to speak for me.
He and his acolytes will be coming for millions of US citizens, even those who voted for him. And there will be nobody left to speak for them because they have been de-fanged.
